We Compost

Our store source separates organic (biodegradable) material for composting. More than half of our "waste" is transported to a farm where it is turned into a nutrient rich material that is great for farming, landscaping, and soil fortification. Some examples of what are included in this mix are paper goods (napkins, plates, cups), fruit and vegetable trimmings, waxed cardboard, and flowers.

New! The bag reuse rebate has gone up!

Please help the environment by reusing bags for groceries. Bring your own or purchase one in the store!

We have Solar Panels

Whole Foods Market Edgewater has solar panels on the roof. Our solar electrical system has significant economic and environmental benefits. The system:

  • Will generate more than 2.2 million kilowatt hours of clean energy over 20 years
  • Result in more than 1,650 tons of CO2 emissions avoided, the equivalent of removing 440 cars of the roadways.
  • Reduce the impact on our local power grid.

Paper, Plastic or Re-usable?

bag

  • The average family accumulates 60 plastic bags in only four trips to the grocery store. According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. goes through 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually. (Estimated cost to retailers is $4 billion.)
  • It takes more than four times as much energy to manufacture a paper bag as it does to manufacture a plastic bag.
  • In 1999, 14 million trees were cut to produce the 10 billion paper grocery bags used by Americans that year alone.
  • Paper bag production delivers a global warming double-whammy - forests (major absorbers of greenhouse gases) have to be cut down, and then the subsequent manufacturing of bags produces greenhouse gases.
  • Look for our new Better Bag! Uses 80% port-consumer recycled content. Made from recycled plastic bottles.
