Simply Bread
Phoenix, AZ
When Harold S. Back moved to Arizona in 1998, he really missed good bread. He even went so far as to jerry-rigg his home oven so he could practice the art of bread baking. In 2005, Back began attending classes at the prestigious San Francisco Baking Institute. His instructor was Jeffrey Yankellow, who, by the end of the program, had surmised that this student had more than a pedestrian curiosity about the business of bread. Back worked hard to develop two sourdough starters that could withstand the tough and arid Arizona conditions and nurtured them on his own kitchen countertop. He soon convinced Yankellow to join him, bought a building and equipment, and opened Simply Bread's doors on February 22nd, 2007. The rest is history.

Sonoita Vineyards
Elgin, AZ
Sonoita Vineyards was just a dream back in 1973 when Dr. Gordon Dutt, owner and winemaker, began growing grapes in Arizona. He had a sneaking suspicion that grapes grown under the intense Arizona sun would bleach and produce wines with poor color and low acidity. Imagine his surprise when the grapes from his experimental vineyard on the Ignacio de Babocomari Ranch in Southern Arizona produced wines the exact opposite attributes! A retired soil scientist from the University of Arizona, Dr. Dutt attributes the quality of his grapes to the amazing soil in the Elgin area, "This part of Arizona is a lot different than most folks imagine — we're at an altitude of 5,000 ft., set in rolling grasslands dotted with white oak, and the soil is nearly identical to that of Burgundy, France. You'll find the results of our efforts, and what great terra rosa (red clay) soil can produce in our estate bottled wines."
